SOA Statistics and Predictions

SOA Statistics

Gartner:

Two interesting predictions recently made by Gartner related to the adoption of the SOA approach in large companies:

  • SOAs will be involved in more than 50% of new business critical applications designed in 2007, a ratio that will increase to 80% in 2010.
  • More than 80% of applications currently in production will be partially or completely revised between now and 2011 using SOA concepts.

GCR Custom Research LLC:

Here are some highlights of a study from GCR Custom Research LLC published in November 2006.  This study explains the position of CIOs on service oriented architectures.  The study also touches upon budget questions:

  • 40% of CIOs say that SOA projects are delayed because of a lack of financial justification
  • 59% of budgets for SOA projects comes from the business side of the enterprise

This indicates that in several cases, SOA projects are initially motivated by the problems to be solved on the business-side.  CIOs however remain the “godfathers” of SOA projects.

In terms of budget allocation, the entreprises surveyed had the following spending distribution:

  • 30% training for the technical staff
  • 40% infrastructure and software
  • 30% consultation for system integration
